The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss

Spoiler Alert
This was an exiting novel from the start. The main character, Kvothe, is a bar keep hiding from his enemies, and from his past, but is overtaken by the master chronicler, who very much wants his story. Kvothe tells his tale exellantly, no doubt because he grew part of the Ruh, profesional story tellers, actors, and all around basic entertainers. Only the Ruh happen to be the best. Kvothe learns from an Archenist who joins the troupe and so begins his higher education. When one night his entire troupe is killed his life task is established and he knows undoubtedly who did it, the Chandrian. Many call them demons but little is truly known about them; this is where Kvothe must start. He makes his way to the University and miracuously gets in having the University pay HIM to be a student. The tale is frought with adventures and hinges on his quest to find the chandrian and his upbringing. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to get my hands on the sequal. This is epitome fantasy at its finest! Anybody who likes magic and a good story will love this book.

Masquerade - Mellisa De La Cruz
SPOILER ALERTIn this book Schuyler continues her search for the solution to Blue Bloods. It has been two months since her grandmother ended her cycle and she hasn't found anything. She decides to go to Venice as Cordelia had suggested. Oliver, her best friend, gets them there with his dad who was on a business trip two weeks. They don't find anything until the day before they leave when Schuyler finally catches her grandfather who is a shape shifter. He proves to be no help and they go back to New York disappointed. Back home the Committee is planning the exclusive 400 ball, also known as the Patricians ball witch raises money for the Blood Donors Committees next full year. Only the rich, powerful, and unhuman can attend and they come from around the world. More new vampires are dieing and Schuyler is at a loss. A new boy comes to school named Kingsley Martin. He is flamboyant and charming, and installs himself as the new big man on campus, even replacing Jack Force while becoming a friend to Jack's twin sister Mimi. In Mimi's past lives she had always married Jack, though they hadn't been twins yet. That they were twins meant they had finally joined in heaven. Yet she noticed Jack distancing himself from her. She couldn't figure out why. They finally had the Four Hundred Ball wear the new vampires were presented to the older ones in their new bodies. Schuyler was too young. She didn't have anything to wear so she wore the dress her mother had worn when she was presented, before she fell in love with a human and swore never to take another human familiar putting herself into a coma. When she enters everyone thinking it was Allegra, her mother, for a moment. Jack is even more entranced. Later Mimi throws her teen masquerade afterparty. Mimi has realized that Schuyler is the cause for why Jack is distancing from her and she is angry. Kingsley has suggested a book of black arts, to summon a Silver Blood to kill her enemy. Mimi is reluctant at first but when other tries fail she agrees. Meanwhile Shuyler's grandfather has come to New York from Venice. He had relented his earlier cowardice and come to help defeat the Silver Bloods. He began to train Schuyler on her new powers since the Committee has neglected all the new vampires. She does better then could be expected which is attributed to her being the only half blood vampire, born through her mother instead of entering the cycle through blood. The only set back is that she gets week after excercizing her powers because her vampire blood overcame her human blood. She had to get a human familiar. Bliss, another vampire friend, had taken a familiar with someone she didn't know and regretted it because she now felt a connection with him and she didn't even know him. Schuyler didn't want to do it with someone she didn't know. She tried to do it with Oliver but he didn't want to and ran away. She realized her mistake and chased after him to the Repository, the vampire's extensive library where Oliver had an office. Mimi had gone downstairs with Kingsley and they started the ceremony. They threw a peice of Schuyler's hair in the fire that Mimi had stolen and summoned the Silver Blood. The Silver Blood killed the Chair of the Committee and seriously hurt Bliss. Schuyler was unharmed. The Committee held a trial to see what had really happened. Kingsley was actually a Venator. A vampire assasin sent to spy and seek out who hosted the Silver Bloods. He claimed the culporate was Mimi. Everyone was shocked. Mimi was to go to Venice and have his blood burned. Mimi's father who had lead the vampires was lowered in their eyes and a white vote was proposed by Schuyler's grandfather and he was elected to lead. He made Schuyler go with them to Venice and Jack asked if she would do the only thing that could be done to save Mimi, and only she could do it since she was Allegra's daughter and Allegra was in a coma. Schuyler complied though at danger to herself since she would have to drink Mimi's blood to access her memories, but she couldn't drink her dead or she would become a Silver Blood. She barely managed to stop. Mimi had been set up by Kingsley Martin, the Martins had hosted the Silver Blood. Mimi was released though she still didn't like Schuyler. The Silver Bloods were still out there. The Martin's had run but another, more powerful family was still out there, in the Committee, and hosting the Silver Bloods.
I REALLY like this series and am only sad that the next book comes out in September, I want it now! Plus, there is supposed to be at least six books in this series, I don't know if I can stand all the waiting. That is the only problem I can find with good books and series, waiting for them to come out.
Blue Bloods - Mellisa De La Cruz

SPOILER ALERTI really liked this book and expect the rest of the series to be just as good. The story is concentrated around a girl named Schuyler Van Alen although it switches perspectives a great deal. It tells of the kids at Duchesne school in New York, an expensive private school. The secret is that some of the kids, some of the most popular, really were not human. They were blue bloods. Relatives of those who came over on the Mayflower to Plymoth and they were vampires. Until there fifteenth birthday they were mostly normal but then blue veins start to show on their arms and a dog will adopt them (really part of their soul come into physical form to protect them in their most vulnerable years) and they start to have memories. Schuyler isn't like anyone else at her school, even the red bloods, the humans, although she doesn't even know the difference. She is an outcast. One night at a party her friend convinces her to go to she almost doesn't get in but she hoped with all her might and the bouncer blinked his eyes and passed them. Later at a dance at school one of the most popular boys catches her and her best friend Oliver, an outsider with her, on the way out. She dances with him and dances through memories, like she was in a video. He experienced it to. Then she is invited into the exclusive Blood Donors Committee. Really the Committee is a cover for the vampires to congregate. They are all rich, powerful, and famous people. They explain what is happening to her though she can hardly believe it, the ten or so others invited latch on to the answer. The trouble is the Silver Bloods. Something is praying on the Blue Bloods but they don't want to recognize it. Her Grandmother who took care of her knew it and helped Schuyler. Her friend who she had had since second grade, Oliver, was actually her Conduit, a Red Blood who was meant to serve her, protect and guide her, also knew something was up. The most popular boy in school Jack Force was also aware something was wrong. One of the new vampires had been sucked empty, like full consumption, and nothing was supposed to be able to kill a vampire. Schuyler tries to navigate her way through her new life, some things the same and others different. She HAD to get the Committee to listen to her or they would all die! Another girl, Bliss, believed her and was trying to help. At the end of the first book Schuyler finds Cordelia, her grandmother, in a puddle of blue blood at home. She had kept the Silver blood from sucking her essence, all her former memories and intelligence out but hadn't been strong enough to stay alive. Her grandmother told her to search for her Grandfather, he would know how to kill the Silver Bloods and save them. Schuyler was able to get enough blood save so that her grandmother could reenter the cycle later.
End first book. I really am only able to give a General overview that is NOTHING compared to the book. I highly recomend this book.
The Last Dragon - Silvana De Mari
SPOILER ALERT This is a great book about the last elf and the last dragon in the world. All though the title is The Last Dragon, it mostly revolves around the elf. For simplicity's sake he is called Yorsh. All of the elves end up drowning because of the constant rains that they are ironically blamed for due to the powers that they have and the humans don't. Yorsh is told by his Grandmother (his mother had died in birth) to run, though he is only a boy. He does so and is very sad. Eventually he comes across a human woman...and eventually a man. There is a clashing of customs of which the man and woman mostly go along with the elf. During the first part they go through trouble when they are pulled by a dictator (who is called by a different name)'s guard into the city and into jail for petty cause. They escape but the elf see's a prophecy written in the stones on the way out, but they humans couldn't read it, they couldn't even read their own language. They follow the prophecy to the last dragon and believe they have broken the prophecy when the rain stops. In the second part of the book the elf had been caring for the old dragon for thirteen years when he finally finds the last book of thousands of books in the library the dragon lived in. It is about dragons, the first he had come across. It explained much about dragons he hadn't known from observing "his" dragon...and then it came to dragon reproduction. He realized "his" dragon was at the end of it's life and having a baby. All of a sudden there was a crash and he rushes back to find the old dragon gone and an egg breaking in the dragon's place. He has to take care of the dragon until until it first flies, then it matures immediately as the stretching muscles connect the spinal cord parts. He then has a longing for a wife, and the humans who had treated him with kindness thirteen years ago. He and the dragon fly to where he believes the humans would have gone but find it in ruins. The bad city had been stretching it's power and he goes to find what the part of the prophecy he missed said but found it scratched out. The book also tells of a girl. The girl is stuck in an loathsome orphanage who's conditions kill more then they let out when they come of age. She has dreams of a prince rescuing her from on top of a dragon. as the dragon and elf fly by several times the sight of the dragon keeps improving her circumstances until the elf follows a trail of stones from the ruined village to the orphanage and actually meets the girl. The girl is taken to the city for the crime of associating with an elf. Her parents had been hanged for the same, but the girl was under aged so she would be hung in private. When the elf goes to save her he still doesn't understand humans and trades himself in in exchange for the girl's freedom. The dictator will hang them both then. But the elf escapes through the underground passages with the girl, since the city was originally elven he used his powers. He and the girl go back to the former orphanage and find a large crowd who wish to escape the land with them that the dragon had gathered. The elf is freaking out, how could he save so many starving and desperate people. He ends up by gathering their attention through stories and marching them miles and miles even though they are dead on their feet because an army is following them. They go to the old village but to save them the dragon gives the ultimate sacrifice...he dies for them closing off the pass. The mass of rebels march down the river to a waterfall, and tunnel down to the beach and sea and freedom. A good ending. PS: The girl gets the elf
The Divide - Elizabeth Kay
I've been behind in writing. So here goes. SPOILER ALERT
I found this book to be full of cool ideas from the start. The book cover is unusual in that the cover opens in the front, not on the side as usual. Though it is a bit awkward to read...So this story is about a boy who has an illness and his whole family believes he is going to die soon. The boy wishes to visit somewhere amazing, somewhere he has read about. So he goes to the jungle, to a special place where the water runs one direction on one side of the mountain, and another on the other side leaving his parents behind. Unfortunately, when he gets there he has one of his many fainting spells. He wakes up in an entirely different world, a world of sprites, pixies, brownies, and elves, and yet everything is know by a different name. He meets a girl elf who becomes the first best friend he ever had. They are in danger though, because an evil and enterprising pixie has heard that a mythical human was in the land and this human would know about science, not just the magic which pervaded the land. The human boy is on his way to the pixie's city seeking a cure for his ill heart. He sets out with his elf friend but and some unicorns but they are attacked by a dark beast the pixie ordered to get the human and kill the rest. The unicorn's die and the elf runs. The human is taken to the pixie but he uses science to break out of the pixie's prison and he takes his elf friend's brother with him. He then meets up with a griffin he met early and his elf friend. They fly to a kingdom by the sea and a great library to try and find a cure for the human's illness. Meanwhile his elf friend's brother and sister are making a printing press (with a book the boy had with him) to write a paper on what the evil pixie was doing so that people would not use the untested potions he was producing. The human and his friends keep the pixie from infiltrating the new kingdom and find a solution for the boy's illness just in time and find a way for him to get back to his world. The story wraps up nicely but is left with the evil pixie traveling to the boy's world, our world, with his dark beast and the boy.

First Blog!
This is my first blog! I hope to write a little something about the books I read in the future cause the plain truth is....I read to much. And of course when you read to much you start to blend the stories together in you head and that would be a gargantuan disservice indeed! I very much respect authors; I've tried a few feeble attempts at writing myself and it is not simple.
So Au Revoir!
I look forward to writing in the future...
